Charlie Stillwell`76
Charlie Stillwell ’76 is a true pillar of the Archbishop Wood swimming tradition — first as a record-setting athlete and later as one of the most successful coaches in program history.
A four-year member of the Vikings swim team, Charlie graduated in 1976 after an outstanding high school career. He was a three-time All-Catholic selection and served as tri-captain his senior year. He swam the backstroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay that captured the Catholic League title and earned a gold medal in the 200 backstroke relay at the Catholic League Relay Meet.
Charlie continued his swimming career at the University of Maryland, competing for three years and making an immediate impact. In 1979, he set the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that also established a new school record — cementing his legacy at the collegiate level.
He returned home to Archbishop Wood to build the next generation of Viking swimmers. From the 1997–1998 season through 2020–2021, Charlie served as Head Coach of both the girls’ and boys’ swimming programs. Under his leadership, the girls’ team never had a losing season. His teams captured remarkable championship success, including:
- 5 Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) Girls Championships (2008, 2009, 2015, 2016, 2018)
- 12 District 12 Girls Championships (2009, 2011–2018, 2019, 2020, 2021)
- 4 District 12 Boys Championships (2011, 2014, 2019, 2021)
His programs also achieved national prominence, earning three Top-3 finishes at the National Catholic Championships and two Top-5 finishes at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championships.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Charlie has served as the Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 Technical Advisor and website moderator since becoming head coach. After stepping down as head coach in 2021, he continues to serve Archbishop Wood as an assistant coach — a role he has held for nine years and counting.
Beyond the pool deck, Charlie remains an active competitor in the U.S. Masters Swimming program, demonstrating the same passion and dedication that have defined his lifelong commitment to the sport.

Hall of Excellence
Gary Zimmaro
Gary Zimmaro devoted decades of leadership and service to Archbishop Wood High School, leaving a lasting impact on its academic, artistic, and co-curricular life. He began his career at Archbishop Wood High School in the 1970s as Band Director and Show Producer/Director, quickly becoming a driving force behind the school’s vibrant performing arts program. Under his direction, Wood produced two musicals each year, and the marching band competed in numerous fall competitions, culminating in a major annual competition in Wildwood each spring. His leadership energized students and families alike, with the Band Parents Association hosting large craft shows to help fund the program’s many activities.
In 2000, Gary transitioned into administration as Assistant Principal. In this role, he oversaw the full spectrum of student activities, including athletics, Student Council, publications, dances, and clubs. While moderators and an Athletic Director managed day-to-day operations, Gary coordinated the overall activities calendar and building use, ensuring that the school’s extensive programming ran smoothly and cohesively.
In January 2010, Gary was named President of Archbishop Wood. His presidency marked a period of growth, innovation, and achievement. During his tenure, the school celebrated numerous athletic championships, increased enrollment, and expanded academic offerings. He launched Exploration 21, a hands-on, lab-based science program that brought experiential learning to the forefront. Dual Enrollment opportunities grew significantly, with as many as 150 students earning college credits. Additional enhancements included the introduction of Chinese language studies, an expansion of Advanced Placement courses, the creation of the St. Thomas More Honors Program, and the addition of a Learning Specialist to better support students’ academic needs. Music was also restored as a formal part of the academic curriculum.
Gary also led significant facility improvements that modernized the campus and enhanced the student experience. Renovations included new bathrooms, windows, desks, and collaborative learning furniture; updated computer labs; SmartBoards in classrooms; and faculty laptops. One of the most transformative projects was the conversion of the underutilized library into The Learning Commons — a dynamic, widely used academic hub that became the heart of student collaboration and study.
His legacy of continuous improvement carried forward even beyond his tenure, with additional upgrades including air conditioning in every classroom, new lockers, updated display cases, and enhancements to the technology hallway.
Through visionary leadership and an unwavering commitment to students, Gary Zimmaro helped shape Archbishop Wood into a thriving, forward-thinking Catholic high school community.
